Clothes to wear when you exercise:

The clothes you should wear when working out depends on what type of exercise you are doing, the weather and where you are working out.  Your personal preference and budget will also determine the style of clothes you wear while working out.  Here are some tips to consider.

  1. Tops and bottoms.  Loose fitting or stretchy clothes are best for working out.  Stretchy long pant (such as sweat pants or yoga pants) or shorts work well for exercise, as well as t-shirts, tank tops or sweatshirts.  For women, a sports bra will be essential for a comfortable workout.  Choose clothes that allow your skin to breathe and if possible, choose a top that is specifically designed for wicking sweat (polyester is the most common).
  2. Socks.  Wear cotton socks for exercise or choose socks made for working out, which are usually made of a cotton and nylon blend.  If possible, wear socks that are seamless because seems can rub and irritate your feet during a workout.  Some socks have a bit of extra padding in the heel and toe area, where irritation is likely to occur.  Make sure the socks are not too tight or loose, because tight socks can constrict your legs and slow down circulation while loose socks may slide down making it too distracting during workouts.
  3. Shoes.  Choose sneakers for exercise that are specific for the type of exercise you will be doing.  If you will be playing basketball, wear basketball shoes and wear running or walking shoes if you will be running or walking, etc.  If you are unsure of what type of exercise you will be doing or plan on doing several types of workout, wear cross-training sneakers.  Go to a store a sporting goods store to be professionally fitted for the right shoes because it’s very important to wear well-fitting shoes when exercising.
  4. Weather.  During the summer, wear light-colored clothing to keep cool and darker colored clothes for working out during the winter to stay warm.  If the weather is cold, layer clothes to stay even warmer.  When working out in the winter outdoors, wear a hat, gloves and neck warmer to retain body heat.  Wear sunglasses to keep the sun out of your eyes, if needed during sunny days.
  5. Safety.  Always keep safety in mind.  Wear reflective clothing if you are running or walking outdoors at night.  If your workout involves playing a sport, wear a helmet or knee pads if the sport calls for it.  When hiking, wear bright clothing (especially orange color) during hunting season to make sure you are easily visible.

Other items to consider when going to the gym:

The same tips, from the list above, apply for tops, bottoms, socks and shoes for working out in the gym.  But also, consider 2 more tips for the gym specifically:

  1. Towel.  As you move about the gym, use a soft, clean towel to wipe your sweat away.  You don’t want to leave your sweat on the seat of a machine.  Most gyms provide clean towels for members to use during their workouts.  If not, you should bring one.  Do not share a towel with anyone, or else you risk sharing germs because sweat carries bacteria.
  2. Washing.  Wash your clothes after the gym.  Even your own sweat, when left to dry on fabric, can breed nasty bacteria and then infect you.  Odor-making bacteria tend to grow better on polyester than cotton.  But you should was all gym clothes afterwards regardless.

Best athletic clothing stores:

  1. Athleta.  Athletic clothing for women and girls that are comfortable and make a bold fashion statement.
  2. Amazon.  A wide range of athletic clothes and shoes for men, women and children at affordable prices.
  3. Macy’s & Nordstrom.  A wide range of brand name athletic clothes and shoes for men, women and children.
